When Do Babies Start Eating?

Feeding babies is sometimes concerning. You need to know when the exact time your babies should be eating solid foods and if they are ready to digest more than liquid. Some conditions are also important to note before you start to feed your babies. Pediatrician appointment is also suggested to discuss a lot of needs and to check up your babies before the solid food program began.

Notice some behavior
It usually starts to show when babies reach 4 months old, some even only starting when they’re 6 months old.

Your babies would show signs such as:
·         Being able to control when swallowing, showing the reflex of preventing to choke
·         Being able to support themselves while sitting and sitting up by themselves. When they did, it shows that they are able to control their head and neck muscles
·         Shows chewing behavior
·         Shows interests in foods and gaining appetite
·         They are teething

What food should you give?
You can start with purees, very soft semi-liquid foods (mix blended cereal with breast-milk or formula or soft-grinded rice mixed with vegetables), mashed foods (mashed potato, mashed apples or banana). You have to make sure that the food is well mashed so it won’t be hard for your babies to chew and digest. And of course, before they are fully able to eat solid foods, you still have to breastfeed or giving them formula.

Things to note
·         Your babies might not immediately eat when you offer, but you could try it again in few days.
·         Your babies might refuse the food, but make sure you’re not forcing them to eat. Again, you could try it again in couple days.
·         Make sure you have equipment ready. High chair, safe tableware, bibs, and washable mat just in case it gets messy.
·         They might get bowel problems, but it is the process of adapting the change of food they consume. But if you’re worried, you could always go to the doctor and do some checkups.
·         It is highly suggested to regularly meeting pediatrician to discuss and arrange the feeding programs for your baby.
