Common home hazards to avoid and make home as a 'real safe place for kids

Common issues suffered by children usually happen at home. Some of the examples are falling down the stairs, ingesting a toxic substance, hitting something hard on head, and many more. There are many things in our house that can potentially endanger the safety of our children. However, there are some steps that we can do to minimize the risk of the accidents. Here some important steps how to prevent the home hazards and make our home safer for our children.

  1. Avoid placing chairs or anything that can be climbed by our kids beside the windows and in the balcony. We must make sure that the door on the balcony is always locked. Place a grip and lighting along the stairs. Make sure there is no items on the steps that can make our children slip. Put a rubber mat that can prevent our kids slipped in the slippery bathroom. Those can minimize the risk of falling.
  2. Turn off all switches and unplug all electrical connections before going to bed or leaving home. Cover the electrical junction box, especially those installed in the area that is easily reached by kids.
  3. Toddler and children like putting any objects into the mouth. So do not give our kids toys and clothes that consist of small objects, such as buttons or marbles. Check all buttons are there in clothes and toys whether they are easily pulled and swallowed or not.
  4. Keep a container of hot water out of the children reach. Place heat creator objects, such as lighters, stoves, and irons, to the place that children can’t reach easily. Turn off directly when the objects are not in use or when you have a break to do another activity.
  5. To reduce the risk of poisoning, keep all chemical-based products, such as medicines, cigarettes, floor cleaning fluid, and cosmetics in a locked place. Do not move liquid chemical into another container such as a drinking bottle. Children can be expected it as a beverage. Immediately remove all products that are close to the expired date.
  6. Toddlers can sink in the bathtub or pool. So always accompany our kids while bathing and playing. Discard the water bath when it is already not in use and put the cover on the top of the bathtub. Make sure the door leading to the pool is always locked.
  7. Avoid giving objects that are made of glass to toddlers. It can prevent wounds caused by broken glass. Keep knives, scissors, and other sharp objects in a locked drawer.
